The Peterborough beer festival is one of the best things that happens in the city, and I’ve been going for YEARS (since I was 17?), so I’m getting excited that it’s only 2 days away.
It’s not only about beer – it’s a massive social occasion, with 35,000 going along over the 5 days – and I always bump into old friends and family.
I’m not just a punter though – I do my bit to to help promote the event using my social media and development skills. Firstly I write a beerfest specific blog – which has been going for a few years. It contains info, galleries, my thoughts, and even a bit of video.
On top of that, 2 years ago I created a small mobile app to support the festival, and it’s become the semi official mobile app of the festival. It lists all the cask beers, bottled beers, perry and ciders. It’s more up to date than the printed official version given out during the festival, and also interactive, letting you create wish lists, and vote on the beers. You can then see what the top 25 beers of the festival are as voted by the public.
Because of that help, I’ve been a guest judge at the official judging which happens on the Wednesday morning – which is great fun. I’m not a super taster, and haven’t taken lessons, so I’m not great at picking out individual flavours, but I do try a lot of different beer, in all styles, so think I can judge if a beers good or bad.
I also went on the local community radio Peterborough FM recently, to talk about the app and the beer festival. Just doing my bit for an event which I treat as my yearly local holiday!
Just to get ready for our festival, I went along to the Great British Beer Festival on Friday, my first time at the Olmpia event, and really enjoyed my day. I took some photos and wrote about that day on my beerfest blog here.
The Peterborough Beer Festival runs 19th – 23rd August 2014 at the river Embankment, all opening times and details can be found on my blog here.
