To celebrate my wife Nicola’s birthday, and our wedding anniversary, we decided to get away from it all with another short trip to Edinburgh, using the free 1st class tickets I earned through the East Coast rewards scheme (2nd time we’ve been able to get £750 of tickets for free!).
We had initially booked up the same five star hotel we stayed at before (Missoni), but while looking for somewhere romantic to eat, I found The Witchery, which not only had an amazing looking restaurant (The Secret Garden), but also some amazing suites – 8 special individual ‘rooms’ to stay. We booked the Sempill suite – as the bedroom looked amazing on the website.
Well it turned out that suite doesn’t even do it justice.. a long corridor leads to a kitchen, dining room / sitting room, lovely big bathroom, and a huge bedroom with a four poster bed. The rooms are all like something you’d imagine in a castle or stately home – walls covered by oak panelling and rich fabrics. What a special place to stay! OK it’s not cheap, but this is a get-away for a special occasion, and right next to the Castle itself.
The suites come with a bottle of champers, and in the morning a basket of goodies delivered for breakfast – what a start to the day! So if you fancy something special for you and a loved one, I can definately recommend http://www.thewitchery.com/ and no, I’m not on a percentage!
For dinner I had a pigeon starter (one way to get rid of em!), and Cote de Boeuf main – which was a big platter of fantastic thick sliced beer.. seasoned so you don’t need anything with it.. with triple cooked chips and salad. Bottle of good Chablis to wash it down.. then a pud; chocolate brioche bread n butter pudding with ice-cream … which was sweet and very nice! Had a glass of Sauternes desert wine with it just to make an effort 🙂
The restaurant has a garden behind it, and the sun was shining through when we first started eating, but as the sun went down, the candles on every table and between/over the tables came into their own, as the only light. That made it feel very private and romantic.
UPDATE: We are going to do the same thing in 2015 – using free 1st class train tickets to travel there and back, and this time staying in the Turret suite. A bit of a treat as I’ve just got a new job (senior analyst programmer).
